My cat Darcy (see picture below) is infected with the feline leucosis virus. The effects of this are similar to HIV in humans - his immune system is affected, and that makes him vulnerable to opportunistic infections and liable to develop tumors. However there are two interesting differences: there is an efficient vaccine against this virus in cats (and as we know, there is no vaccine for HIV yet), but there is no antiviral treatment available - the opposite of what is the case with humans. How would YOU care for a cat with this virus?
